Dual Degree Urban Design

General Information

In cooperation with Tongji University in Shanghai/China the degree course Urban Design is also offered as a dual degree program. It is held entirely in English and open to 20 students of which ten students will be Chinese. All participants will study collectively in Berlin and Shanghai for one year each.

The particular admission and selection processes are regulated in the subject-specific regulations. Start of studies is in October (winter term).

The progress and content of program complies with the courses, that are offered in the master's program Urban Design, except for the two last semesters including the master's thesis, which will be spent in Shanghai. 

Qualification

In addition to the presented qualification aims to be achieved in the master's program Urban Design, graduates of this dual degree program distinguish themselves by a mutual understanding of urban dynamics in China/Asia and Germany/Europe. Graduates are particularly able to participate in international discourse as they benefit from their acquired professional and international competence.

Dual Degree

Graduates are awarded a Master of Science in Urban Design by TU Berlin and a Master of Engineering with Specialization in Urban Design or a Master of Architecture by Tongji University.

Intercultural Exchange

The four-semester program conducted at both universities (TUB and Tongji University), combines intercultural exchange between students with the participating countries' experience in Urban Design. The dual degree program offers a basis for collective learning in a context across cultures and prepares students for working in an international environment.

At TU Berlin:

  • Basic course Chinese for German students
  • Basic course German for Chinese students

At Tongji University Shanghai

  • Basic course Chinese
  • Basic course Chinese for architects

Expenses

TU Berlin does not raise any tuition fees. However, within the dual degree program, expenses of EUR 200,- per semester will occur for extracurricular activities.

The dual degree program is funded by the DAAD for the duration of the students' stay at Tongji University with a monthly scholarship of EUR 800,- as well as EUR 35,- health insurance.

Application

Only students, who are admitted for the regular for the regular Urban Design program (apply via uni-assist only), will be taken up into the dual degree program. Hence, please apply for both programs at once. Application deadline is May 15.

Potential students please hand in:

  • a bachelor's degree in architecture, urban and regional planning, landscape planning or in a comparable degree course with at least 180 ECTS-points or a different degree qualifying for a profession
  • evidence of practice/internship of 18 weeks duration
  • desirably evidence of experience in intercultural contexts such as a study or work abroad
  • evidence of English language skills (TOEFL test with at least 550 points in the written test or 213 points in the computer-based test, Cambridge or Oxford certificate)

Please note that only full applications on paper will be taken into account. A full application consists of:

  • application form filled in completely
  • résumé
  • officially authenticated copies and, if necessary officially authenticated translations of your bachelor's or diploma degree
  • evidence of English language skills (TOEFL test with at least 550 points in the written test or 213 points in the computer-based test, Cambridge or Oxford certificate)
  • letter of motivation (maximum 350 words)
  • job interview

Dates

Application deadline for the Urban Design dual degree program is May 15 for the following winter term.
